The aim of MobiDig is to mobilize a sustainable plastics economy with the help of digitalization, using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as an example of a packaging plastic in the food sector, and to create an ecosystem for plastics recycling. Solutions for ensuring that packaging plastics and their recyclates can be used safely and profitably in the future, especially in the food sector, lie in a better understanding of their properties and behavior throughout their entire life cycle—taking into account material, process, and application. To achieve this, the distributed experimental and numerical data are recorded, structured, and linked in a semantic model (ontology) according to the FAIR principles. The processing from plastic to semi-finished product (film) and further into the product (tray), as well as the use and recycling over three life cycles, are considered. By evaluating, correlating, and optimizing the life cycle data structured in the ontology, the processes can be specifically optimized in detail and as a whole using a prototypical software platform based on various quality criteria (carbon footprint, quality, costs, etc.), and a suitable process technology adapted to the material condition can be used. To this end, material properties, process steps, and carbon footprint are brought together in a digital product passport.
