The life cycle of copper becomes digital - for innovative material design up to recycling
The core of the KupferDigital project is to create a demonstrator for a digital data ecosystem that will serve as a future-proof platform for the digitalisation of materials research and the metal processing industry. The KupferDigital project is developing methods and concepts to digitally record the life cycle using copper as an example - from ore extraction to recycling. The basis is the development of so-called ontologies. These can be understood as a kind of knowledge network. They serve as common standards for the description of materials and technical processes. They help with the digital recording of process steps and material properties. In parallel, concepts for data structures, storage and exchange of material data via newly defined interfaces are being developed.
The provision of digitised life cycles of copper will enable industry to evaluate new material developments at an early stage in product development, for example from the point of view of sustainability. Copper is of current importance here because it is of fundamental importance for the digital transformation as well as the energy and mobility revolution and thus of high social value. The project goals are transferable to other metallic structural and functional materials as well as to other industrial sectors.
The project results will be made available to all interested parties as part of the activities of the MaterialDigital innovation platform.
